What Are Skin Tags? Causes, Types, and When to Remove Them

What a skin tag actually is

A skin tag is a small, soft outgrowth of normal skin — a core of loose collagen fibres and tiny blood vessels wrapped in ordinary skin, hanging from the surface on a narrow stalk (doctors call the stalk a peduncle). Most are between one and five millimetres, skin-coloured or slightly darker, and completely benign: a skin tag is not a tumour in any worrying sense, is not caused by a virus, and cannot spread to other people or other parts of your body.

Because they are so common — a large share of adults develop at least one — skin tags have collected many names. You may see them called flesh tags, skin ticks, soft fibromas, or even 'skin maru'; the medical term is acrochordon. All describe the same harmless growth.

Why skin tags form

The strongest driver is friction. Skin repeatedly rubbing against skin, clothing, collars, or jewellery encourages these small outgrowths — which is exactly why tags cluster in the neck creases, underarms, eyelid area, under the breasts, and the groin. Where there is chronic gentle rubbing, tags follow.

Several other factors raise the odds. Tags become more common from the 30s and 40s onward, and a tendency to grow them clearly runs in families. Hormonal shifts — pregnancy is the classic example — can trigger a crop of new tags. And skin tags are seen more frequently in people with insulin resistance, elevated blood sugar, or higher body weight, which is why a sudden generous crop of new tags is occasionally a nudge to review general health, not just skin.

Skin tags keep growing or multiplying — is that a problem?

Usually not. People who are prone to skin tags typically accumulate more of them over the years, and an individual tag can slowly enlarge — both patterns are ordinary. A tag that twists on its stalk can also suddenly darken and become tender as its blood supply is pinched; this looks alarming but is usually the tag strangulating itself, and a doctor can remove it and settle the site.

What deserves attention is a growth behaving unlike your other tags. The point of a medical assessment is not that tags are dangerous — it is that other growths can impersonate them, and the impersonators matter.

Why home removal is the wrong shortcut

Pharmacy wart-remover acids, freeze-at-home kits, tag-removal bands, and thread tying all promise a cheap fix — and all share the same two problems. First, they treat blind: none of them confirms the growth actually is a benign tag, and moles should never be burned, frozen, or tied off without assessment. Second, they trade a controlled, minutes-long clinic procedure for days or weeks of chemical irritation, broken skin, and a meaningfully higher chance of a lasting mark or infection.

How doctors remove skin tags

In clinic, removal is straightforward. The doctor first examines each growth to confirm it is a benign tag — anything atypical is evaluated properly instead of removed on the spot. Confirmed tags are then removed under local anaesthesia, typically with a CO2 laser or electrocautery, taking the tag off at the base of the stalk. Multiple tags are commonly cleared in one visit, small scabs form at the treated spots, and simple aftercare sees most sites healed within one to two weeks.

Removal treats the existing tags; it does not change your underlying tendency to grow them, so people prone to tags may develop new ones over time. That is a maintenance conversation to have at assessment, not a failure of treatment.

No — a true skin tag is benign and stays benign. The reason doctors still assess before removing is that other growths, including moles that occasionally matter medically, can resemble tags. Assessment exists to catch the impersonators, not because tags themselves are a risk.

Usually nothing beyond a tendency to grow them. That said, numerous tags appearing over a short period are associated with insulin resistance and metabolic factors, so a sudden generous crop can be a reasonable prompt for a general health review alongside the skin assessment.

Occasionally — a tag that twists on its stalk can lose its blood supply, darken, and drop off. Most tags, however, persist indefinitely, and waiting for self-resolution is not a reliable plan for a tag that bothers you.

You cannot change age or genetics, but reducing chronic friction (looser collars, managing skin folds), maintaining a healthy weight, and managing blood sugar reduce the drivers. People prone to tags often still develop some over time.
