Profhilo vs Rejuran: How to Choose

Two of the most asked-about injectable skin treatments — and they are not interchangeable. Here is how a doctor actually decides between them.

Quick answer

Profhilo and Rejuran are often discussed as if they were rival versions of the same treatment. They are not. Profhilo is a stabilised hyaluronic acid bio-remodeller — it spreads through the skin to improve hydration and firmness, and is most often discussed for early laxity, crepey texture and dull, dehydrated skin. Rejuran is a polynucleotide preparation derived from salmon DNA — it works as a skin healer, supporting repair processes, and is most often discussed for texture, post-acne skin quality and a weakened skin barrier.

Because the two work through different mechanisms toward different goals, the question is rarely 'which one is better' — it is 'which problem are we actually treating'. That is an assessment question, and it is why a consultation comes before either treatment at a doctor-led clinic.

What is Profhilo?

Profhilo is an injectable made of stabilised hyaluronic acid at one of the highest concentrations used in aesthetic medicine. Unlike a dermal filler, it is not designed to add shape or volume in one spot — its low viscosity lets it spread evenly through the skin after injection, where it acts as a bio-remodeller.

Bio-remodelling means it hydrates the skin from within and signals the skin to support its own collagen and elastin. The typical protocol is two sessions spaced about four weeks apart, with periodic maintenance afterwards if you and your doctor decide to continue. It is most often discussed for early skin laxity, crepey skin on the lower face and neck, and skin that looks tired or dehydrated despite good skincare.

Mechanism

Stabilised hyaluronic acid

A high concentration of hyaluronic acid that spreads through the skin rather than sitting in one place like a filler.

Mechanism

Bio-remodelling

Hydrates from within and signals the skin to support its own collagen and elastin over the following weeks.

Mechanism

Typically two sessions

The standard introductory protocol is two sessions about four weeks apart, then maintenance as agreed with your doctor.

What is Rejuran?

Rejuran is an injectable based on polynucleotides — fragments of DNA derived from salmon, purified for medical use and well tolerated by human skin. Rather than hydrating in bulk the way hyaluronic acid does, polynucleotides act as a repair signal: they are used to support the skin's own healing and regeneration processes.

In practice, Rejuran is most often discussed for skin texture, enlarged-pore appearance, post-acne skin quality, fine crepey skin around the eyes, and skin that has become thin, sensitised or slow to recover. Because it works with gradual biological repair, it is typically planned as a course of several sessions spaced weeks apart, with changes appearing progressively rather than overnight.

Mechanism

Polynucleotides

Purified DNA fragments derived from salmon — biologically compatible and used as a skin-repair material.

Mechanism

Healing signal

Supports the skin's own repair and regeneration processes rather than adding hydration in bulk.

Mechanism

Multi-session course

Usually planned as a series of sessions spaced weeks apart, with gradual, cumulative change.

Profhilo vs Rejuran: the key differences

Setting the two side by side makes the decision logic clearer. Neither is 'stronger' — they simply answer different questions. Profhilo's hyaluronic acid bio-remodelling is hydration- and firmness-led; Rejuran's polynucleotides are repair- and texture-led.

Keep in mind that individual response varies, and the comparisons below describe how the treatments are typically discussed — not a promise of what either will do for a specific person.

Which suits which concern?

A useful way to frame the choice: if your dominant concern is that skin feels loose, crepey, dehydrated or dull — a hydration and firmness problem — Profhilo is usually the first option discussed. If your dominant concern is texture, post-acne marks and skin quality, a sensitised barrier or skin that heals slowly — a repair problem — Rejuran is usually the first option discussed.

Most real faces are not that tidy, which is why the framing is a starting point rather than a verdict. Acne-related texture with early laxity, for example, can reasonably point toward either — or toward a sequenced plan. This is exactly the kind of judgement a doctor makes in person.

Can Profhilo and Rejuran be combined?

Yes — and in suitable candidates they can be complementary, because they address different layers of the same goal: Rejuran supporting repair and skin quality, Profhilo supporting hydration and firmness. When both are used, they are usually sequenced across separate visits rather than injected in the same sitting, with the order and spacing decided by what the skin needs first.

Combination is not automatically better, though. It adds sessions, cost and planning, and some skins simply do not need both. A doctor will only suggest combining them when the assessment genuinely points to two different problems worth treating — not as a default upsell.

How a doctor decides at consultation

At a consultation, the doctor examines your skin in person — laxity, hydration, texture, scarring history, barrier condition and skin tone — and listens to which change actually matters to you. That combination of examination and goals is what points to Profhilo, Rejuran, a sequence of both, or sometimes a different treatment entirely, such as energy-based options.

Expect the conversation to cover realistic expectations, the likely number of sessions, downtime (both involve injections, so temporary bumps, redness or pinpoint marks are common for a day or so), and how results will be reviewed. There is no obligation to proceed on the day.

From question to plan

  1. 01

    Consultation

Discuss your concerns and history with the doctor — what you have tried, and what change you actually want.

  2. 02

    Skin assessment

In-person examination of laxity, hydration, texture and barrier condition identifies the dominant problem.

  3. 03

    Personalised plan

Profhilo, Rejuran, a sequence of both — or a different option entirely — with sessions and review points mapped out.

What about cost?

DrPlus does not publish fixed prices for Profhilo or Rejuran, because the honest answer depends on your individualised plan: which treatment (or sequence) suits your skin, the number of sessions involved, and the areas being treated. A flat figure quoted before assessment would either overcharge simple cases or understate realistic ones.

After your consultation and skin assessment, you will receive a clear, personalised quote for the recommended plan — before anything is booked, and with no pressure to proceed.

Common questions

In suitable candidates, yes — they address different things (hydration and firmness versus repair and texture), so some treatment plans sequence both across separate visits. Whether combining adds genuine value for your skin is an assessment decision; it is not automatically better than using one well.

Duration varies with individual skin, lifestyle and how many sessions are completed, so a universal answer would be misleading. Both are typically maintained with periodic top-up sessions rather than treated as one-off fixes. Your doctor can give a realistic estimate for your plan at consultation.

Neither is a primary acne scar treatment. Rejuran is more often discussed for post-acne skin quality and texture, but true depressed scars usually respond better to treatments such as subcision, lasers or RF microneedling — sometimes with a skin booster in a supporting role. A scar assessment identifies the right starting point.

Profhilo typically starts with two sessions about four weeks apart; Rejuran is typically planned as a course of several sessions spaced weeks apart. The exact number depends on your skin's starting point and how it responds — your doctor will outline a realistic schedule before you commit.

Both involve fine injections, and numbing strategies are used to keep treatment comfortable. Temporary bumps at injection points, mild redness or pinpoint marks are common and usually settle within a day or two. Your doctor will explain aftercare specific to the treatment you have.
