— Who this page is for

Who this page is for

PRP is a specific tool for a specific problem. These are the situations where patients ask about it — and where the honest answer is sometimes 'not for you'.

  • Early-to-moderate pattern thinning

A receding hairline, thinning crown or widening parting that has progressed over a few years, where the scalp still shows fine, miniaturised hairs rather than bare skin.

  • Already on medical therapy and wanting more

You are using doctor-prescribed topical or oral therapy, shedding has slowed, and you want to add a regenerative layer to push density further.

  • Not a candidate for, or not ready for, a transplant

You want to strengthen and thicken what you have before — or instead of — considering surgery, and understand that PRP supports follicles rather than relocating them.

  • Women with female-pattern loss

A widening parting with a kept hairline, after medical causes such as iron and thyroid have been checked. PRP is offered to women on the same candidacy rules as men.

  • Travelling from Singapore for PRP

PRP for hair is not offered at our Singapore clinics; many Singapore patients plan the series around trips to Johor Bahru, about 20–30 minutes from the Second Link.

  • Looking for honest limits

You have read marketing that makes PRP sound like a regrowth miracle and want a doctor to tell you where it genuinely helps and where it does not.

— What this involves

How PRP for hair loss works — and what it can and cannot do

Platelet-rich plasma is made by drawing a small amount of your own blood and spinning it in a centrifuge so that the platelet-rich layer separates from the red cells. Platelets carry growth factors that signal repair; when the concentrated plasma is injected into the scalp around thinning follicles, the aim is to prolong the growing phase, improve the blood supply around the follicle and thicken miniaturised hairs. Because the preparation comes from your own body, allergic reaction is not a concern, and the main after-effects are temporary tenderness and mild swelling at the injection sites.

The evidence supports PRP as an adjunct for androgenetic (pattern) hair loss in men and women when follicles are still present — studies report improvements in hair count and thickness for many patients, with maintenance needed to hold the result. The evidence does not support PRP as a treatment for shedding caused by low iron, thyroid disease or hormonal conditions, for scarring alopecia, or for areas that have been bald for years, where no living follicle remains to stimulate. That is why candidacy is decided by a doctor after examination, not by a package.

At DrPlus Johor Bahru, PRP for hair almost always sits inside a wider plan. Doctor-prescribed topical therapy, and oral options where suitable, address the hormonal driver of pattern loss; PRP adds a regenerative stimulus; microneedling can be paired in the same visit to improve delivery and trigger its own repair response. Treating with PRP alone while ignoring the cause tends to produce a short-lived improvement that fades.

A typical protocol is a short initial series — commonly three to four sessions spaced about four weeks apart — followed by maintenance sessions every few months, adjusted to how your scalp responds. Each visit takes under an hour including the blood draw and preparation. We do not publish prices; the number of sessions, the areas treated and what is combined with PRP all shape the quote, which you receive in writing, in Malaysian ringgit, after the assessment.

— What to expect

From enquiry to first photographic review

A clear pathway so you know what is decided when — and so Singapore patients can plan trips sensibly.

  1. Enquire

WhatsApp us with a description of your thinning and any treatment you are already using. We book a consultation and, for Singapore patients, suggest timing that allows a first session in the same visit if you turn out to be a candidate.

  2. Consultation and diagnosis

History, scalp examination and blood tests where indicated. The doctor confirms whether this is pattern loss with living follicles — the situation PRP is for — or something that needs a different plan.

  3. Written plan and quote

If PRP is indicated, you receive a plan that sets out the series, what is combined with it, the expected timeline and a written quote in ringgit. No obligation to proceed.

  4. Initial series

Sessions about four weeks apart, each under an hour. Topical therapy continues at home. Microneedling is paired where planned.

  5. Review and maintenance

Standardised photographs after the series show the response. Maintenance sessions are spaced according to that response, and the overall plan is adjusted with your doctor.

What to expect after each session

Day 0–2

Mild tenderness, pinpoint marks and sometimes slight swelling at the injection sites. Normal washing resumes the next day; avoid heavy exercise, saunas and dye for 24–48 hours.

Weeks 2–8

Nothing visible yet — follicles respond slowly. Some patients notice shedding settle; this is the medical therapy and PRP beginning to act on the growth cycle.

Months 3–6

Where PRP is working, finer hairs thicken and density along the parting or crown improves on the photographic comparison. Maintenance is planned from here.

Response varies by individual and by how early treatment began. Anyone promising regrowth within weeks of a single session is overpromising.

— Why DrPlus

Why patients choose DrPlus for PRP hair treatment

Diagnosis first, PRP where it is indicated — not a session package sold to everyone who walks in.

Candidacy decided by a doctor

The scalp is examined and medical causes are excluded before PRP is offered. If your pattern will not benefit, you will be told plainly.

Part of a plan, not a stand-alone

PRP is combined with doctor-prescribed therapy and, where useful, microneedling — because treating the cause is what makes the gain last.

Standardised preparation

Blood is drawn and processed in-clinic under medical supervision, with a consistent protocol for every session.

Photo-tracked reviews

Standardised scalp photographs at baseline and after the initial series show whether PRP is earning its place in your plan.

— Cost factors

What shapes the cost of PRP hair loss treatment in Johor Bahru

We do not publish a price because a PRP plan is not one product. The number of sessions in the initial series, the size of the area treated, whether microneedling is paired, what medical therapy accompanies it and how maintenance is spaced all change the yearly picture — and the examination decides most of those.

When comparing clinics, ask what is included in each session (preparation method, numbing, the area covered), whether a doctor performs the injections, and whether the plan addresses the cause of the loss or sells PRP on its own. The cheapest series is rarely the one that holds.

  • Number of sessions in the initial series and the maintenance interval
  • Size of the area treated — crown only, parting, or hairline and crown
  • Whether microneedling is paired in the same visit
  • Medical therapy prescribed alongside, and any blood tests needed first
  • Reviews with standardised photographs after the series

— Cross-Border Care

Travelling from Singapore for PRP?

  • About 20–30 minutes from the Tuas Second Link
  • Consultation and first PRP session can share one visit
  • Sessions about four weeks apart — fits a monthly trip
  • Written quote in ringgit — no obligation

PRP for hair loss is not offered at our Singapore clinics, which is why a large share of our PRP hair patients come from across the Causeway. The clinic is in Iskandar Puteri, roughly 20–30 minutes from the Tuas Second Link, with on-site parking, and a session takes under an hour.

Message us before you travel. We confirm the consultation and, where PRP is likely to be suitable, reserve time for the first session in the same visit. Later sessions are spaced about four weeks apart, which fits a monthly trip; review photographs and questions are handled over WhatsApp in between.

— FAQ

Common questions

For pattern hair loss where follicles are miniaturised but alive, clinical studies report improvements in hair count and thickness for many patients when PRP is given as a series and maintained — usually alongside medical therapy. It does not work for shedding with a medical cause, scarring alopecia or long-bald areas, because there is no living follicle to stimulate. Your doctor examines the scalp and tells you honestly which situation applies before any session is booked.

A typical initial series is three to four sessions spaced about four weeks apart, followed by maintenance every few months according to your response. The exact plan is set by your doctor after examination and reviewed with standardised photographs after the initial series.

The scalp is numbed with a topical anaesthetic before the injections, and most patients describe the session as tolerable rather than comfortable. Mild tenderness, pinpoint marks and slight swelling for a day or two afterwards are normal. You can drive and work the same day.

Combining is usually the right answer. PRP adds a regenerative stimulus, but it does not address the hormonal driver of pattern loss — doctor-prescribed topical therapy, and oral options where suitable, do that. Microneedling in the same visit can improve delivery. PRP on its own tends to give a gain that fades once sessions stop.

We do not publish prices because the plan — the number of sessions, the area treated, whether microneedling is paired and what medical therapy accompanies it — is decided after examination. You receive a written quote in Malaysian ringgit at the consultation, with no obligation to proceed.

Not at our Singapore clinics — regenerative injections such as PRP and exosomes are not offered there. Singapore patients who want PRP travel to our Johor Bahru clinic in Iskandar Puteri, about 20–30 minutes from the Tuas Second Link; sessions about four weeks apart fit a monthly trip. If you would rather be seen in Singapore, our Singapore hair loss page explains the diagnosis-first medical care offered there.

Yes. Women with female-pattern thinning — a widening parting with a kept hairline — are candidates on the same rules as men, once medical causes such as low iron, thyroid disease and hormonal conditions have been checked and treated. PRP is not used for postpartum or trigger-related shedding, which usually recovers on its own. PRP is not offered during pregnancy.

PRP is generally avoided in people with blood-clotting or platelet disorders, active scalp infection or inflammation, certain cancers or those on specific medications, and during pregnancy. Low platelet counts and heavy smoking can reduce the response. Your doctor reviews your history before offering it.

Not for several months. Follicles respond slowly, so the first honest comparison is the standardised photograph taken after the initial series, around three to four months in. Reduced shedding is often the earliest change; visible thickening follows for those who respond. Anyone promising regrowth within weeks of a single session is overpromising.

A QUICKER SCROLL

Clinic life, in short clips

Take a breather from the detail — swipe through Facebook and TikTok moments from DrPlus, then continue when you're ready to book.

— Methods compared

The PRP protocol, explained plainly

What happens in a session, how the series is structured, who should and should not have it, and how PRP is combined with the rest of the plan.

Candidacy

Who PRP suits — and who it does not

PRP is for pattern hair loss with living, miniaturised follicles, in men and women. It is not for shedding with a medical cause, scarring alopecia or long-bald areas.

  • Scalp examination confirms miniaturised hairs rather than bare skin
  • Iron, thyroid and hormonal drivers are checked first where indicated
  • Blood-clotting disorders, certain medications and active scalp infection may rule it out

The session

What a PRP session involves

A small blood draw, about ten minutes of centrifugation, then a series of small injections across the thinning areas after the scalp is numbed.

  • Under an hour in clinic, including preparation
  • Topical numbing keeps the injections tolerable; mild tenderness afterwards is normal
  • No bandages; you can drive home and work the same day

The series

Initial series and maintenance

Commonly three to four sessions about four weeks apart, then maintenance every few months depending on response. The series is set by your doctor and reviewed with photographs.

  • First photographic comparison after the initial series
  • Maintenance spacing is adjusted to your scalp's response, not a fixed package
  • Singapore patients can align sessions with monthly trips

Combinations

PRP with microneedling and medical therapy

PRP works better as a layer on top of treatment for the cause. Microneedling in the same visit creates micro-channels that improve delivery and add a repair stimulus.

  • Doctor-prescribed topical therapy continues at home between sessions
  • Oral options are considered where appropriate for the individual
  • Microneedling is paired when the scalp and the plan suit it

Aftercare

After each session

Expect mild soreness, pinpoint marks and sometimes slight swelling for a day or two. Normal washing resumes the next day.

  • Avoid heavy exercise, saunas and hair dye for 24–48 hours
  • Do not apply topical therapy on the night of the session unless advised
  • Contact the clinic if redness or pain increases rather than settles

Alternatives

When something else fits better

If follicles are gone, a transplant conversation is more realistic than PRP; if shedding has a medical cause, treating that is the plan. We say so.

  • Exosome therapy is a newer regenerative option discussed with honest evidence framing
  • Medical therapy alone is often enough for early thinning
  • We do not perform hair transplants and will refer on where that is the right answer

No regenerative treatment revives a follicle that has already gone. PRP is offered where the examination shows there is something to stimulate.
