Microneedling in Malaysia: RF Microneedling vs Dermapen

Both are called 'microneedling' — but a Dermapen session and an RF microneedling session are different treatments with different depth, downtime and results.

One name, two tiers of treatment

'Microneedling' in Malaysia covers everything from light salon rollers to medical radiofrequency devices — which makes price and result comparisons meaningless until you know which tier you are looking at. The two clinically relevant tiers are standard motorised microneedling (Dermapen and similar pens) and RF microneedling (devices that deliver radiofrequency energy through insulated needle tips).

Standard needling creates thousands of controlled micro-channels; the healing response stimulates collagen near the surface. RF microneedling does that and adds heat at a chosen depth in the dermis — collagen contraction plus remodelling where atrophic scars actually live. The additional mechanism is why the two differ in results, downtime and cost.

— Comparison

Dermapen-style needling vs RF microneedling

Mechanism

Standard microneedling
Micro-channels trigger the wound-healing collagen response
RF microneedling
Micro-channels plus radiofrequency heat at controlled dermal depth

Best for

Standard microneedling
Surface texture, glow, enlarged pores, very mild scarring
RF microneedling
Atrophic acne scars, deeper texture, skin firmness

Downtime

Standard microneedling
Redness for roughly a day
RF microneedling
Redness and mild swelling for one to three days

Typical course

Standard microneedling
Several sessions, often monthly
RF microneedling
Three to six sessions, four to six weeks apart

For acne scars, depth decides

Atrophic acne scars — rolling, boxcar, mixed — are structural: the deficit sits in the dermis, sometimes tethered by fibrous bands. Surface-level needling cannot reach that architecture; it improves the skin above it. This is why standard microneedling reviews for real scarring so often read 'nice glow, scars unchanged'.

RF microneedling reaches the depth where remodelling matters, and for tethered rolling scars it is often sequenced after subcision releases the bands. If your scars are the concern, the honest starting point is a scar-type assessment — not a device choice.

Safety on Asian skin — and why the operator matters

Both tiers are generally well suited to Asian skin because they work beneath the surface rather than heating it broadly — a genuine advantage over some ablative lasers for pigmentation-prone skin types. The caveat is technique: needle depth, energy settings and sterile protocol are operator decisions, and aggressive settings in unskilled hands cause the very post-inflammatory pigmentation patients are trying to avoid.

In Malaysia, medical-grade microneedling — particularly RF — belongs in a licensed clinic with a doctor selecting the parameters. Salon-tier rollers are a different product for a different purpose.

What microneedling costs in Malaysia — honestly

The two tiers sit in different price territories: RF microneedling costs more per session than Dermapen-style needling because the device, consumable tips and medical oversight cost more. Within each tier, your quote depends on the treatment area, the number of sessions your skin realistically needs, and who performs the work.

DrPlus does not publish prices; after a scar and skin assessment you receive a personalised, written quote for the recommended course — with no obligation, and with the cheaper tier recommended when it genuinely serves your concern.

Common questions

For dermal problems — atrophic acne scars, deeper texture, laxity — yes, because the radiofrequency heat remodels collagen at depths standard needling cannot reach. For surface goals like glow and very mild texture, standard microneedling can be entirely adequate and costs less. The concern decides, not the device.

Both tiers work as a course: commonly several monthly sessions for standard needling, and three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart for RF microneedling. Collagen remodelling is gradual — results build between and after sessions rather than appearing overnight.

Generally yes — energy delivered beneath the surface carries less pigmentation risk than broad surface heating. The protection is real only with correct settings and technique, which is why depth-based treatments should be doctor-planned on pigmentation-prone skin.

Standard microneedling helps mild surface irregularity; established atrophic scars need RF microneedling — often after subcision if scars are tethered. A scar-type assessment before treatment prevents spending a course of sessions on the wrong tier.

DrPlus Aesthetic Clinic in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru offers doctor-led RF microneedling with scar mapping before any plan is quoted. We welcome patients from across Malaysia and Singapore — the clinic is roughly 20–30 minutes from the Tuas Second Link.
