Oily Scalp and Hair Loss: Is a Scalp Treatment Really the Answer in Singapore?

Scalp treatments are the most-sold answer to hair loss in Singapore — and the least likely to address the cause. Here is what oiliness does and does not do to your hair.

Does an oily scalp actually cause hair loss?

Not by itself. Sebum is produced by glands attached to every follicle, and in a humid climate like Singapore's most people produce plenty of it. Oil sitting on the scalp does not suffocate follicles or 'clog' them shut — a myth that sells a great deal of scalp cleansing. What is true is that oiliness and thinning frequently appear together, because the same androgen hormones that stimulate sebum production also drive pattern hair loss in people who are genetically sensitive to them. The oil is a fellow symptom, not the cause.

That distinction matters because it decides the treatment. Degreasing the scalp more aggressively does nothing to the hormonal signal shrinking the follicle. If your parting is widening or your hairline receding and your scalp happens to be oily, the oil is the least important of the two findings.

When oiliness does matter: the inflamed scalp

There is one situation where the scalp itself drives shedding: inflammation. Seborrhoeic dermatitis — the greasy, flaky, sometimes itchy rash that lives where sebum is richest — folliculitis (inflamed follicles, often with small pustules) and chronic itch all irritate the follicle environment, and a persistently inflamed scalp sheds more. In these cases treating the scalp genuinely helps, but 'treating' means medical treatment for the specific condition: medicated shampoos containing antifungal or anti-inflammatory agents, short courses of prescription lotions, and attention to the triggers.

A doctor distinguishes inflammation from ordinary oiliness in a few minutes under good light: redness, scale, pustules and tenderness are the signs. If they are absent, the scalp is not the problem and a scalp-focused plan will disappoint.

Simply oily
None, or a 'heavy' feeling
Inflamed (needs treatment)
Itch, burning, tenderness

What a cosmetic scalp treatment can and cannot do

A typical scalp treatment in Singapore involves a scalp analysis camera, deep cleansing, exfoliation, a mask or serum and a massage, sold as a course of sessions. It can leave the scalp cleaner and less itchy for a few days, and for people who simply dislike how their oily scalp feels, that may be worth having. What it cannot do is change the hormonal signal behind pattern loss, replace iron, correct a thyroid, or treat an inflammatory skin condition, because it contains no medicine that acts on any of those.

The problem is not that scalp treatments exist; it is that they are sold as hair loss treatment. If you are losing hair, the useful question is not 'how do I treat my scalp' but 'why am I losing hair' — and a magnified camera image of oily follicles does not answer it.

What to do if your scalp is oily and your hair is thinning

Wash as often as your scalp needs — daily is fine in Singapore's climate and does not cause hair loss; the hairs you see in the drain were already in their shedding phase. Use a gentle shampoo, and a medicated one only if a doctor confirms a scalp condition. Avoid heavy leave-in products near the roots, and do not scrub aggressively — irritation is worse for shedding than oil is.

Then get the thinning diagnosed. A doctor examines the parting, hairline and crown, looks for miniaturised hairs, checks the scalp for inflammation and asks the questions that point towards shedding, pattern loss or a medical driver. Blood tests are arranged only when the history suggests them. The plan that follows treats the cause — and your scalp, if it genuinely needs it.

How DrPlus Singapore approaches an oily scalp with hair loss

At Tanjong Pagar, East Coast and Novena, the consultation starts with why you are thinning rather than how oily your scalp looks. The scalp is examined for inflammation and treated medically only if a condition is present; the thinning itself is diagnosed and managed on its own merits. We do not sell scalp-treatment packages as hair loss treatment. Results vary by individual, and progress is reviewed with photographs rather than camera stills of your sebum.

Common questions

A cosmetic scalp treatment can make an oily or flaky scalp feel cleaner for a few days. It does not treat the common causes of hair loss — pattern loss, iron deficiency, thyroid disease, hormonal drivers — because it contains no medicine that acts on them. Scalp treatment helps shedding only when an inflamed scalp condition is part of the picture, and then the treatment should be medical, not cosmetic.

No. Daily washing in a humid climate is sensible for an oily scalp. The hairs you see in the shower were already in their shedding phase and would have fallen that day regardless. Aggressive scrubbing and harsh products can irritate the scalp, so wash gently.

Because the same androgen hormones stimulate both sebum production and, in people who are genetically sensitive, the follicle shrinkage behind pattern hair loss. The oil and the thinning share a cause; the oil does not create the thinning.

Ordinary dandruff does not. Seborrhoeic dermatitis — the inflamed, greasy, flaky form — can increase shedding while it is active, and it is treated with medicated shampoos and prescribed lotions. Once the inflammation settles, that component of the shedding usually stops.

A doctor diagnoses the cause of the thinning — examining the pattern, looking for miniaturised hairs, checking the scalp for inflammation and arranging blood tests where indicated — and then prescribes treatment for that cause. A scalp centre cleans and soothes the scalp. Both have a place; only one treats hair loss.
