Broad-spectrum light vs a picosecond laser
IPL (intense pulsed light) emits a broad band of wavelengths filtered to target haemoglobin and melanin at once — which is why it is popular for generalised redness, minor sun damage and overall 'photo-rejuvenation'. It is technically not a laser: it floods the skin with multiple wavelengths rather than one precise beam.
Pico laser is the opposite philosophy: a single wavelength delivered in picosecond pulses so short that pigment shatters mechanically before significant heat spreads into surrounding tissue. That precision is what makes pico the tool of choice for defined pigment problems — sun spots, certain birthmark-type pigment, stubborn post-acne marks and tattoo ink.

The Asian-skin consideration

IPL's broad spectrum is absorbed by epidermal melanin as well as the target, which raises the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in deeper tones — it can still be used well, but the margin for error is narrower and patient selection stricter.

The caveat: melasma remains a special case for every device. It is treated conservatively at low energies over a longer course, and no light-based tool 'cures' it.
