Who this page is for
HA knee injections may be considered for adults with osteoarthritis-related knee symptoms who want a non-surgical option after proper assessment.
Mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis
You have been told you have early wear-related change in the knee and want to understand whether viscosupplementation is a reasonable option.
Knee stiffness that limits daily activity
Walking, stairs, or standing from a chair have become uncomfortable, and rest or simple painkillers are no longer enough.
Wanting an alternative to repeat steroid injections
You want to discuss how HA differs from corticosteroid injections and which is appropriate for your knee.
Not ready for — or not suitable for — surgery
You want a doctor's honest view of the non-surgical options before considering a surgical opinion.
— What this involves
What an HA knee injection is
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in healthy joint fluid, where it lubricates and cushions the joint surfaces. In osteoarthritis, the joint fluid becomes thinner and less protective. Viscosupplementation injects medical-grade HA into the knee joint to supplement those lubricating and cushioning properties.
It is important to understand what HA injections do not do: they do not regrow cartilage, cure osteoarthritis, or suit every cause of knee pain. They are one supportive option for selected patients — usually those with mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis symptoms — and the response varies by individual.
Every injection is preceded by a doctor-led assessment at our Singapore clinics: history, examination, previous treatment, and any features that need imaging or a specialist opinion first. The specific product, the number of injections, the expected duration of effect, the risks, and the alternatives are discussed before you decide.
Some patients are better served by a different pathway — shockwave therapy for soft-tissue problems, PRP for selected regenerative indications, physiotherapy, or an orthopaedic referral. If that is the case for your knee, your doctor will say so directly.
— Why DrPlus
How DrPlus approaches knee injections
The injection is the smallest part of the process — the assessment around it is what makes it appropriate.
Your knee is examined and your history reviewed first, so treatment targets the actual cause of your symptoms.
Expected benefit, how long relief may last, and the chance it may not help your knee are discussed openly before treatment.
HA is weighed against shockwave, PRP, rehabilitation, and referral — you are not funnelled into one procedure.
Your response is reviewed so the plan can be adjusted — repeated injections are never automatic.

Common questions
Corticosteroid injections aim to reduce inflammation quickly and are often used for short-term flare control. HA viscosupplementation aims to supplement the joint's natural lubrication, with a slower onset and a different duration profile. They suit different situations — your doctor will explain which, if either, fits your knee.
It depends on the product and your knee. Some HA products are given as a single injection; others are planned as a short weekly series. Your doctor confirms the product and schedule during your assessment, before anything is booked.
Common short-term effects include injection-site pain, swelling, warmth, or stiffness for a few days. Less common but important risks include infection and allergic reaction. Your medical history is reviewed and the product-specific risks explained before treatment.
The fee depends on the product used and the number of injections planned, so we quote after your assessment. You will receive a clear written outline and price with no obligation to proceed.
