Who this page is for

Parents consider circumcision for their sons at different ages and for different reasons — religious, cultural, hygiene, or medical. All are valid, and the consultation is judgement-free either way.

  • Planning circumcision for a newborn or infant

Younger infants often suit simpler device-based methods with faster healing. Your doctor will confirm the right timing and approach for your baby.

  • Arranging circumcision for an older boy

School-age boys and teenagers are assessed with age-appropriate clinical guidelines, clear explanations, and parental involvement throughout.

  • Religious or cultural timing

If circumcision is planned around a religious or cultural milestone, we can discuss timing, method, and healing so the plan fits your family's needs.

  • A medical reason in a child

A tight foreskin (phimosis), recurrent balanitis, or repeated urinary infections in a boy can be reviewed — sometimes treatment other than circumcision is appropriate first.

— What this involves

How baby and child circumcision works at DrPlus

Every case starts with a doctor-led consultation. The doctor reviews your child's health and anatomy, discusses your reasons and any concerns, and confirms whether circumcision is appropriate now — or whether waiting, or a different treatment, would serve your child better.

The method is matched to age. For young infants, device-based techniques such as the Plastibell ring are commonly considered, because they avoid stitches and generally heal quickly. For older boys, approaches are closer to the adult procedure — conventional with dissolvable stitches, or device-assisted methods — chosen with healing and comfort in mind.

Comfort is planned carefully at every age. Local anaesthesia is used so the procedure itself is not felt, with age-appropriate comfort measures beforehand and during early healing. Your doctor will explain exactly what your child will experience, so you can prepare them honestly.

You will go home with clear written aftercare — how to bathe and dress the area, what normal healing looks like day by day, and the signs that should prompt a call to the clinic. Follow-up is scheduled at either of our Singapore clinics, in Tanjong Pagar or on the East Coast, whichever is closer to home.

Common questions

There is no single required age. Younger infants often suit simple device-based methods with quick healing, while older boys are treated with approaches closer to the adult procedure. Your doctor will advise on timing for your child — including whether there is any reason to wait.

Local anaesthesia is used so the procedure itself is not felt. Some fussiness or mild discomfort during early healing is normal and is managed with simple, age-appropriate measures your doctor will explain. You will know exactly what to expect before anything is scheduled.

For young infants, device-based techniques such as the Plastibell ring are commonly considered because they avoid stitches and generally heal quickly. The final choice depends on your child's age and anatomy, confirmed by the doctor at consultation.

You will receive clear written aftercare covering bathing, nappy or clothing care, what normal healing looks like day by day, and the warning signs that should prompt a call to the clinic. Healing in infants is usually quick; older boys take a little longer.
