— Who this page is for

Lip filler goals we see

Lip filler covers several different goals. What suits your lips, and what to avoid, is decided at a doctor-led consultation.

  • Subtle volume that still looks like you

You want slightly fuller lips without an overfilled look, in proportion with your face.

  • Definition or a softer border

The edge of the lip has become less distinct, or lipstick runs into fine lines around the mouth.

  • Uneven or thin lips

One side sits differently, or the upper lip almost disappears when you smile.

  • Dry-looking lips

You want lips to look smoother and more hydrated rather than bigger.

— What this involves

How lip filler works

Lip filler uses a soft hyaluronic acid (HA) gel placed in or around the lips to improve shape, definition or volume. HA is a sugar molecule found naturally in the skin; the body breaks injected HA down gradually, so results are temporary.

The lips move constantly and are very expressive, so small amounts in the right place look more natural than large volumes. Your doctor looks at the balance between the upper and lower lip, the lip border, the corners of the mouth and your profile before deciding where, and how much, to place.

Softer gels are used in the lips than in the cheeks or chin. Because the lips are mobile and have a rich blood supply, filler here usually lasts less time than in firmer areas, and technique matters.

In Singapore, dermal fillers are regulated medical devices and should be injected by a registered doctor after assessment. At DrPlus, the doctor who assesses your lips performs the treatment, at our Tanjong Pagar, East Coast or Novena clinic.

— What to expect on the day

Your lip filler appointment, step by step

A first visit combines the assessment and, if filler suits you, the treatment. You can also take the plan away and decide later.

  1. Step 1

    Medical history

Your doctor asks about your health, medications and supplements that affect bruising, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, previous filler, and whether you get cold sores.

    Duration:
    About 10 minutes
  2. Step 2

    Lip and face assessment

The doctor looks at your lips at rest and while smiling and talking, from the front and side, and discusses what you want to change.

    Duration:
    About 10 minutes
  3. Step 3

    Plan, consent and numbing

If filler suits you, the doctor explains the amount, where it goes, expected swelling and risks. Numbing cream is applied for comfort.

  4. Step 4

    The injections

Small amounts of soft HA filler are placed with a fine needle or blunt cannula. Most lip fillers also contain a local anaesthetic.

    Duration:
    Usually 15–20 minutes
    Sensation:
Pressure and stinging, eased by numbing
  5. Step 5

    Check, aftercare and review date

The doctor checks the shape with you sitting up, gives you written aftercare and books a review at around two weeks.

— What to expect

Downtime and aftercare

The lips swell more than other areas, so plan for a few days of noticeable swelling. Most people return to work the next day.

  1. Straight after

Swelling, tenderness and small bruises are common. A cold pack, used gently, can help. Avoid lipstick for the rest of the day.

  2. First 48 hours

Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas, very hot drinks and kissing or pressing on the lips.

  3. First two weeks

Swelling settles and the lips can feel slightly firm or uneven before the final shape shows. Avoid dental work if you can.

  4. Two-week review

Your doctor checks symmetry and shape. A small top-up is only considered if it is needed and safe.

How the result develops

Days 1–3

Swelling is at its most visible; lips can look larger than the final result.

Weeks 1–2

Swelling settles and the filler softens. The result is judged at the review, not before.

Months 6–12

The filler is gradually broken down. Lips usually fade sooner than firmer areas such as the cheeks.

How long filler lasts varies with the product, the amount used and your metabolism. Contact the clinic immediately if you notice increasing pain, skin that turns pale, dusky or blotchy, or any change in vision.

— Matching the goal

Lip goals and how they are approached

'Lip filler' describes several different techniques. The goal decides where filler goes and how much is used.

  • A gradual approach, with a review before adding more, lowers the chance of an overfilled look.
  • If your goal needs less filler than you expected, or none, your doctor will say so.
Common lip filler goals and how a doctor usually approaches them
GoalWhat is usually donePoints to know
Subtle volumeSmall amounts in the body of the lipBuilt gradually; proportion matters more than size
DefinitionFiller along the lip borderCan reduce lipstick bleed; small amounts look most natural
Balance or asymmetryDifferent amounts on each side or each lipSome asymmetry is normal and is not fully removed
HydrationVery soft gel spread thinlySmoother look with little change in size
Lines around the mouthOften a combination of treatmentsFiller alone may not be the right tool

— Risks & side effects

Is lip filler safe? Risks and side effects

Lip filler is generally well tolerated when a trained doctor assesses you first, uses a registered product and injects conservatively. The lips have a rich blood supply, so the risks are explained before you decide.

  • Common and short-lived: swelling, bruising and tenderness, often more than in other areas.
  • Cold sores can flare after lip injections in people who get them; tell your doctor, as preventive medicine may be advised.
  • Less common: lumps, unevenness, or filler spreading beyond the lip border over time. Most can be adjusted or dissolved with hyaluronidase.
  • Rare but serious: filler blocking a blood vessel, which can damage the lip tissue. Increasing pain or pale, dusky or blotchy skin needs urgent review by the treating doctor.
  • Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active cold sore or infection, or with a known allergy to the product or lidocaine.

— Choosing a doctor

How to choose a doctor for lip filler in Singapore

These questions are reasonable to ask at any clinic, including ours.

  • Is a registered doctor assessing you and injecting? Any doctor can be looked up on the Singapore Medical Council's online register.
  • Does the doctor discuss proportion and your whole face, and tell you if less filler would suit you better?
  • Will the doctor name the HA filler product, and is it registered with the Health Sciences Authority?
  • Is hyaluronidase available on site in case filler needs to be dissolved urgently?
  • Are the risks explained, including cold sores and the rare risk of a blocked blood vessel?
  • Is there a review visit, and do you receive a written plan with time to decide?

— Compared with alternatives

Lip filler compared with other options

Several treatments change how the lips look, and they work in different ways. This table describes them generally; your doctor explains which suit you and which DrPlus offers.

— FAQ

Common questions

Commonly around six months to a year. The lips move constantly and have a rich blood supply, so filler usually fades sooner than in the cheeks or chin. It varies with the product, the amount used and how your body breaks it down.

Not if the planning is careful. Overfilled lips usually come from adding more volume than the lip can carry. A conservative first session, a review at two weeks, and the option to add later keep the result in proportion.

The lips are sensitive, so numbing cream is applied first, and most lip fillers contain a local anaesthetic. Most people feel pressure and stinging that is manageable. Swelling for a few days is normal.

Tell your doctor about cold sores, medications and supplements that affect bruising, and any upcoming events or dental work. Plan treatment at least two weeks before an important occasion so swelling has settled.

Hyaluronic acid lip filler can usually be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, for example if there is a lump, unevenness or a result you do not like. Your doctor discusses this as part of planning.

We do not publish patient result photos. Singapore's rules on medical advertising do not allow them to be used to promote treatments, and results vary between people. Your doctor explains what change is realistic for your lips at the consultation.

It should not change how you smile when placed in appropriate amounts. Lips can feel firm for the first days. If the concern is an upper lip that disappears when you smile, a lip flip or a combination may be discussed instead.

A lip flip with anti-wrinkle injections, lip hydration treatments, cosmetic lip tattooing for colour, or surgery for permanent change. Each does something different, so the right choice depends on what you want to change.
